There have been reports of Tinder scams in Medellin, Colombia, as with many other cities around the world. These scams typically involve individuals creating fake profiles on the dating app and then tricking unsuspecting users into sending them money or divulging personal information AND IN THE WORST SITUATION, GETTING PERSONAL CONTACT BUT BE KIDNAPPED AND STOLEN.
Here are some common situations as we have seen as lawyer´s of victim
One common scam involves users connecting with someone on Tinder who claims to be in a desperate or urgent situation, such as being stranded in a foreign country or needing money for medical expenses or utilities bill. They would then ask for financial assistance or for the user to transfer money to them through various means.
Another type of scam involves scammers luring users to fake websites or apps that resemble Tinder, claiming that they need to verify their identity or provide payment information. Once the user enters their personal or financial details, the scammer can then use that information for identity theft or fraudulent activities.
To protect yourself from these scams, it is important to exercise caution when interacting with strangers online. Here are some tips to avoid falling victim to a Tinder scam in Medellin:
be skeptical of anyone asking for money: If someone you just met on Tinder asks you for money or financial assistance, be cautious and do not send any funds. Scammers often play on people’s emotions and may sound convincing, but it is best to verify the person’s intentions before providing any financial help.
Verify the person’s identity: If you are suspicious about a person’s profile or their story, ask for additional information or evidence to confirm their identity. This can include video calls, exchanging social media profiles, or meeting in person in a safe and public place.
Use caution with personal information: Avoid sharing sensitive personal information, such as your home address, full name, or financial details, with someone you just met on Tinder. Scammers can use this information for identity theft or other fraudulent activities.
