For the past 17 years as a Colombian attorney, I have helped hundreds of people to find their missing or lost Colombian birth certificates. Clients came to my office and explained that once they had the original Colombian birth certificate and they lost the registration number and because their age (nothing before 2010 is digitalized and records are kept in physical books) they don’t even know where to start to look their Colombian birth certificate.

- Missing the complete book of registration from Colombia notary. Years ago, notaries were appointed by president as political favors in consequence the notary was not permanent, and notary took books to his house and died. No one know where books were left.
- Fire in the notary and burned out the complete office.
- Flooding in the notary. It is common in the coast of Colombia.
- Colombian birth certificate was registered years later. Person was born in 1972 and registered in 1995 by a relative and never knew who did it. Common for Colombians immigrants.
- Clients who argued they do are registered but after weeks search turned out they were not, but they only had catholic baptized record.
