In 17 years of experience as a lawyer in Colombia and being the writer to the book of civil marriage, the steps for a US citizen to get divorce depends mostly on the behavior of his/her Colombian partner.

In example I have seen cases in which I made a call to the Colombian wife, and she is very cooperative and is willing to sign and notarize all documents, having this because of a very easy and fast divorce that can even be done with a public notary and takes less than 30days.

Also, other cases Colombian woman is not cooperative, and she does not care about being sued but in the mediation part of the trial, she agrees to get divorce and judge grants it. This sept requires gathering for the US client things like documents, witnesses, depositions, records etc., which makes the divorce slower and more expensive than a non-contested however times get cuts in 50% compared to the next option.

A variation of this story is that Colombian woman get sued and never answer or appears to court. This makes the case longer because judge needs to take the testimony of witnesses and plaintiff but in 95% of cases, judges grant the divorce.

Now, around a 10% of cases, goes to a litigation case that involves appeals, motions, evidence hearings and lot of appearance. Mostly this type of cases is discussion for alimony or child support.

I know every case is different please contact me for further consultation.
