The social security system in Colombia consists of various subsystems, such as pension, health, and labor risks, as well as the family fund and other supplementary services established by Colombian legislation. It is obligatory for both dependent and independent workers to enroll in this system.

In terms of health, the objective of the Social Security System in Colombia is to regulate crucial public health services and ensure accessibility for all residents. According to local regulations, employers are mandated to contribute 8.5% of an employee’s monthly salary to the health subsystem. On the other hand, the employee is accountable for contributing 4%. This results in a total of 12.5% of the employee’s monthly salary being allocated to their health insurance.

The labor risks subsystem aims to prevent, protect, and assist employees in cases of work-related accidents or illnesses. It covers risks involving death and disability. Employers bear full responsibility for paying the contributions, which are determined based on the job’s associated risk class and degree. Failing to provide this coverage could lead to the employer being directly liable for all expenses related to labor risks, as well as facing sanctions from local authorities.

In Colombia, employers are legally obligated to pay three different types of payroll taxes. This includes the contribution of 4% of the monthly payroll to the Family Fund, which aids employees with recreational, educational, sports, cultural, or tourism services. Additionally, employers are required to contribute 2% of the monthly payroll to SENA, a national entity focused on providing apprenticeship programs. Lastly, employers must allocate 3% of the monthly payroll to ICBF, a national entity dedicated to comprehensive care programs for children and adolescents. Overall, these contributions amount to 9% of the monthly payroll and are calculated as a percentage of the company’s monthly payroll.
